Shop on Carsales.com.au. Dealer or private is up to you, but it doesn’t matter IMO. Get pre-purchase inspection from RACV. If the seller refuses to consent, walk away. Only buy registered and with a current roadworthy certificate. Stability control is a non-negotiable feature you have to have. Cars with ESC will generally have airbags too. A little Ford or Mazda should do the trick. Honda or Toyota are also OK if u can get one in your budget with reasonable kms. Stay away from prestige brands and quirky ones (eg Citroen). I hear many issues with Holden small engines, especially turbos, so I would steer clear. Hope this helps.

Pickles and Grays are OK IF you have an NRMA certified mechanic check things, or a close friend who can help you. If you are ‘hands on’ maybe you already have an edge. I know Carsales.com.au jus started instant trade offers, I wonder if it just goes to dealers or if they are making an alternative to Gumtree?

Carsales.com.au is the best place to look. Saves you driving all over the metro area searching for a specific car. Also - when you're buying used, I would recommend checking to see if the dealership is an RACV green light approved dealer. I got my used car from a place with their certification, and it had been independently inspected by the RACV to determine what condition it was in. You can do this at any dealer, though, if you pay for the inspection yourself. It's called a pre-purchase inspection. It's very helpful because it will give you an unbiased opinion on the state of the car, everything from the engine to the suspension to the interior.

Dealerships are more expensive. I'd look for something with low Kms on carsales that comes with a roadworthy. Getting a car serviced at a mechanic is part of car ownership. Since you're looking at newer cars some might have service warranty still on them. Drive away? I think you'll still need to attend to a vicroads to register the vehicle in your name.

Dig through carsales mate! I was in the market with a similar budget 6 months ago. I remember seeing dealer demo Kia Ceratos straight from dealerships for under 20 k. I ended up with a 2017 Ford Focus Trend done 18 k kms for 16 k all inclusive. It was the only option with a peppy turbo petrol engine that fit my requirements. Found the lower civic and mazda 3 variants a little too underpowered for my liking.

Look online you'll get a better deal on a used car. Otherwise. Try around Underwood plenty of used car yards around there. I got my car via carsales but was sold by Underwood car world had no issues with them and knocked them down a good amount on the sale price

Going through a dealer wont always protect you. But at your budget and what i assume is your desires for a car (do you want a 4x4 or SUV? No, ill assume a reasonable hatchback will suffice.) You can purchase lots of cars still in warranty for that price and have them looked over by a mechanic at your cost prior to sale if you want to go privately and save some money. If you want to buy privately, a bit of due diligence, vehicle selection and asking to see recent service reports can help to avoid a lemon. However if you insist on using a dealer; The 7 year warranty from Kia is fully transferrable. So something like [This 2018 Rio](https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2017-Kia-Rio-S-Auto-MY18/OAG-AD-18487761) will give you 5 years warranty remaining and would be a superb little car. [There’s also the Accent](https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2017-Hyundai-Accent-Sport-Auto-MY17/OAG-AD-18469535) which will save you a few thousand but is also a bit more basic, and has a shorter 5 year warranty, but still a good 2 years left on it. Personally at your budget, i’d buy a Kia Rio, they have the new design type so they look very modern, excellent warranty, and great features like Apple Carplay which, having just bought a car with Carplay, is an absolute godsend and i love it. They also have reverse camera, sensors and 5 star safety. Only downside is a lack of cruise control but as you are in Sth Melb, this may be superfluous. Also top tip- Carsales takes a $50 commission every time you contact a dealer thru their app or website. If you scroll to the bottom of the listing, look for the LMCT number, google it and then you can see the dealer and find any reviews, and contact them directly and ask about the specific vehicles.

Carsales has a massive choice, and I’d look at a vehicle with low kms., maybe still with a bit of warranty if possible, and complete and legit. service records. Once you’ve had a look at it, I’m sure you’ll notice whether the owner took care of it or whether it was thrashed.

Carsales.com.au is a good place to start. Any car you buy *must* have a RWC. Beware of private sellers selling without RWC. Also note that RWC makes no guarantees as to the reliability of the car, so if you’re not mechanically inclined an inspection is worthwhile. RACV do these.

IMO carsales.com.au is pretty good. Your mechanic will tell you if there is anything wrong with the car. You can expect to find a car with no major problems. If there is a problem, you can haggle on the purchase price to get it fixed. You will probably save a few grand buying privately vs from a dealer for the exact same car. Nothing you can buy from any source will be as unreliable as your current car. 400 k kilometres? Nobody does that kind of distance in cars any more.

In most cases, used car dealerships will greatly overcharge you for what you're buying. Do you know what you're looking at when you inspect a car. I would honestly recommend buying privately whether it's through gumtree, facebook marketplace, or through carsales.com.au If you aren't confident in your ability to inspect a car and find any faults etc, you can get a local mechanic or I think even RACQ to do an inspection for you before you purchase. If the seller isn't comfortable with this, then that's a good reason to steer clear of the sale

I used carsales and looked interstate because they are cheaper there usually. Don't know why second hand cars are more expensive in Brisbane. Only had to pay a few hundred extra to have mine shipped up.
