There are tons of sources zillow, craigslist, the google, that can help you. I personally like zillow, whatever the local "good" real estate page is (for example streeteasy.com in nyc, westsiderentals.com in LA) and, depending on what you are looking for, simply googling something like "luxury apartments in Some Town, Some State"

It's relatively cheap compared to Santa Monica and the rest of the westside, but there are always hidden gems in any area of the city. I used Zillow to find a place and scored, but also westsiderentals.com is the go-to for most people. To echo what everyone else said, it ultimately doesn't matter where you live, but every area has a trade-off. I.E You'll probably hear about "The Valley" being cheapest, but it is also furthest from the westside.

Three best ways to find a place in LA (including ALL of SoCal, really) is either Craigslist, Westside Rentals, or just cruising the area. Craigslist is free (obviously) and a good way to see what's out there. There are often a 2-bedrooms in the $1,50 0 or so range on Shenandoah South of Pico. You should definitely sign up for Westside rentals https://www.westsiderentals.com/ for $70 but their emails are what really work. You tell them your price range, number of rooms,etc. They send you several emails a week with good leads perfectly tailored to your specifications. Don't put too many though or you won't find anything. Price, rooms and location are good enough. Look for Beverly Hills adjacent and Beverly Hills. Their website isn't very useful though which misleads some people,to wrongly assume that their service isn't useful.
