  John Lewis has a great haberdashery and would be a good place to test out sewing machines. I would also recommend a Janome and for around £100 you will get a great machine which will last you a long time.   How about a covered notebook with an appliqué dachshund she could use it as a journal of her married life, or just for keeping notes in! As it is my favourite book to make I have it made up in several different colours ready to post for £16 with free p&p - oh and the cover is reusable too so when the book is finished she can just slot another one inside and carry on using it. www.facebook.com/HandmadeByMelHearn
