What is sport and remedial massage?
Sport and remedial massage uses techniques that deal directly with the soft tissues; muscle, fascia, tendons and ligaments. These techniques have developed over time to deal with the conditions that the human body experiences, not only in sport but also in everyday life. It can assist with the prevention of sports injuries and rehabilitation of a patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age or ability.
How can sport and remedial massage benefit me?
Benefits of sport and remedial massage include:
Improved recovery time and the reduction of inflammation - Massage increases blood circulation, which in turn helps increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients needed for recovery. It also stimulates the lymph system, the body’s natural defence system that rids the tissues of waste and unwanted toxins. The combination of these effects, results in improved tissue regeneration and therefore improved recovery time and the reduction of inflammation.
Injury treatment and reduction of muscular aches and pains - Massage assists in breaking down scar tissue and adhesions that can cause stiffness and pain during recovery time and hence accelerates the return to normal range of movement.
Improved range of motion, muscle flexibility and decreased muscle tension - Massaging the muscles and soft tissues makes them become more supple and resilient. Massage provides stretching and helps loosen contracted, shortened muscles with restricted range of motion and can stimulate weak, flaccid muscles. This muscle balancing can subsequently improve and encourage more efficient movement.
Injury prevention - Many overuse soft-tissue injuries will benefit from massage treatment. Massage helps prevent the formation of scar tissue and can improve the rate of tissue repair. This therefore helps heal minor traumas more quickly before they are able to progress to a more acute phase.

remedial massage is not solely for sports participants, a back injury sustained from gardening for example will respond well to treatment.
