Hello, favorite neighbours! Is it just me or is BS3 especially the North Street area missing a good independent bookshop? I would love to buy my books locally and was wondering if anyone more familiar in the area could point me in the direction of a cool independent one?
Matt Y. replied:
Bookshops are very hard to make profitable (which is sad cos a bookshop/cafe is my ideal job) especially independents. As others have said use www.hive.co.uk to support your local independent. Foyle's in Cabot Circus is also independent.
Does anyone know of a good ethical online bookshop? I would like to recommend some books, but there's absolutely no way that I'm going to link to the Amazon tax dodgers, or any of their numerous subsidiaries.
Nikhwat M. replied:
Try the hive.co.uk, They order in books and send them to a bookstore near you!
Steve P. replied:
hive.co.uk And I'm sure I can't be the first person to say that!
Marion F. replied:
I'm not sure if there's one called, hive.co.uk that I was involved with and they linked you your local independent bookseller?
Andrew O. replied:
Hive.co.uk isn't on the ethical consumer list, but according to one of the administrators on ethical consumers discussion forum, they don't appear to have any subsidiaries in any tax havens. They also have a scheme that gives a donation of part of the sale on their site to a local independent book shop off your choice. http://www.hive.co.uk/about-us/
Helen P. replied:
Same as Cross Leeds was going to suggest the hive. Not least because for every purchase a local independent bookshop gets something although I'm not sure of that's only for e book purchases.
Rhian W. replied:
Hive supports local independent book shops
Damian W. replied:
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Owen Jones was plugging The Hive... it's a network of local bookshops, and I think other shops. Only red about it the other day. Maybe worth looking into
