Does anyone know about getting council approval for house additions? We have a patio that isn't approved and now we need it to be for the sale of our house. Any ideas where to start ?

The main issue with unapproved works (apart for the structural integrity and BCA compliance) is that Council is making a habit of coming after owners to collect the revenue for unapproved works and they are using satellite imagery to find it. The person that becomes responsible for paying for these approvals is whoever the current owner is. That is why potential a buyer might be turned away, but it does not stop the sale. Same for pools. You can sell a home with a pool fence that does not comply, as long as you complete the relevant form to say that it does not comply.
