I have some high res photos I'd like blown up to about 16" x 16" so I can hang them in my house, but online options are more expensive than I was hoping. The images are all black and white, and I just want the prints, no framing or anything (got that covered already). I don't really have any preference for paper quality; they can be on printer-quality paper for all I care. Don't have much in the way of a budget either, as I've never had this done before, but all I know is that $130/image that Shutterfly quoted me is a little steep for what I'm looking for. Thanks!

  $130? Sounded high, looked, and it should be $20 or less for a 16 inch x 16 inch print. Anyway, Thompson Photo does nice work locally. AmericanFrame.com online does nice work.

I've checked Hobby Lobby & Michaels but even with a coupon it's pretty expensive and it's not something budgeted for the choir department to pay for this year.   Help needed! I want to put a canvas in a floater frame, but I'm having a really hard time finding a frame the right size. Is it a huge faux pas to leave space between the canvas and the frame? We're talking 2-3 inches. I'm happy to use a white frame and call it intentional, but if it's a no-no I'll veer away. PS- looking for 6x6, gold. If anyone has any suggestions (with express shippin!) please let me know! Edit: 6"x6". Too many hours of typing 6x6 into google, forgot the quotes!

  At the frame shop where I used to work, we left 1/4" of space between the canvas edge and the frame no matter the size of the piece. The face of the frame was always 1/8" above the surface of the painting. I have used americanframe.com for fast, cheap custom frames before. But your best bet is to just take it to a frame shop if you want something professional looking. Good luck!

  Framing is expensive. I'd love to shop local and I would get a quote from Frame and I, then see how the others stack up. If you use a coupon from Michael's make sure it covers the extras like better glass, mattes, etc. The last few times I've gotten something framed, I've used https://www.americanframe.com/

  Mostly I buy standard frames and mattes at my local art store (Michaels). I wait to buy when frames are on sale (this week at Michaels, actually). If I have something of an odd size, I will buy mattes and frames online. I have used Americanframe.com, they send you all the pieces and you assemble it yourself. Back in the day, I had a matt cutter and I'd cut my own, but I don't really have a good workspace these days for it. It helps that I have my own printer, so I can print to whatever size I need. Custom framing from frame shops is ridiculously expensive.

  Keep in mind, cheap mats are usually not archival--they contain chemicals that will eventually damage the print. Not always a big deal, but for important photos make sure you use archival, acid-free, "rag board." Also, as kickstand said, Americanframe.com is a good source.

  I have used Queens for 8 years for framing my Japanese prints, etc. I'e always been happy. You do have to tell him exactly what you want (mat, color, etc.) The frames differ in size from standard American frames. I order do it yourself aluminum frames for my personal photographs from AmericanFrame.com but shipping has gone up considerably. Glass is then an issue, as are mats. :(

  Wife wanted to frame a print and we went to Michael's and Joannes and it was really expensive, like over $300. She went to Americanframe.com and ordered it herself and did the framing and it came out great.

  If you live in Boston or Berkley, there's a place called the Framers' Workshop that is a DIY framing place. I'm not sure if the two stores are related or just have the same name. Google says there might be one in Arizona, too. If you aren't there or want something cheaper, try something like this: http://www.americanframe.com/ I know that Utrecht art stores (and probably other chains like Blick) have a similar DIY framing sections where you can select 4 pieces of metal and a matte, then get the glass cut at a local hardware store. Still not cheap, but definitely cheaper.

  I like AmericanFrame.com for custom matts and framing. For prints WHCC.com is good, and they do some mounting and canvas printing, not sure about framing. Costco also makes high quality, archival color prints from digital files, on real photo paper that goes through chemistry (Fuji Crystal Archive C print paper last I checked).

They offer nice papers and have high-end Epson printers. Everything I've bought from them has been fantastic. Another option for printing only is http://www.danecreekprinting.com/ . He's also got nice printers and is local to the area. You may be able to pick up directly from him and save on any shipping fees.
