I'm a 3rd year therapist with an B.S. in Biology, and A.S. in Massage Therapy from Ohio. My background is in PNMT, AIS, and MFDT and have worked mostly with chiro patients and athletes. Just seems like I'm surrounded by cancer survivors and active patients recently and I'm feeling called to shift my focus. Thanks! ; )

My school did not offer me any evidence based information on contraindications, just out instructors stating that it was contraindicated to perform massage (of any kind) to the extremity that had lymph node dissection involvement. I would appreciate any literature/studies to review. Thank You!
Bonnie B. replied:Klose Training out of Colorado for MLDT for cancer patients. They supply all the MLD certification training for the Peregrine Oncology Massage certification training. Gayle MacDonald, the original grandmother of the budding in-flight massage world is the definitive "go to" person with questions. S4OM.org is invaluable also. Good luck.

Thank youMichelle I. replied:Check out the Society for Oncology Massage, they are a national list and resource, lighthold.org is local to VA but I believe Lauren now travels the country and I personally reccomend her classes, and look for a copy of "Medicine Hands" by Gayle MacDonald. Definitely look for a class that is several days at least- an ofternoon overview will not prepare you for the compelxities of working with cancer patients or with the oncology clinic. http://s4 om.org/

Lauren Muser Cates is in Arlington, Tracy Walton does hers in Boston (the closest to Baltimore). I would research the instructors on s4 om.org to see who you feel more connected with. The Maryland AMTA will be hosting Lauren at the MAC conference in May, but it's not as in-depth like her 6 day, but great base with lots of room for more.
