Hardrive Repair Recommendations? Hey R/Philadelphia,
I was wondering if anyone had any local recommendations for shops or labs that did hard drive repairs/copying (External HDD)? I realize it's pretty pricey in general upwards of over $1k, figured I'd try looking for any local places before I go down the route of shipping it away to see if they can get anything from it. I'm not too concerned with price but more towards reputation.
It's a failed external HDD that has a lot of pictures of me and my younger brother who passed away recently that are very important to my family and I. I also realize this is the exact reason why you should have multiple backups of your pictures both physical and digital.
Thanks for any help!

If the drive still spins up you can try GetDataBack recovery software. I've had very good results with it in the past. Good luck. https://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
Does anyone know if the computer repair place next to Shimons is still there? If so, what time does it close? And if not are there any other reliable places I can send my laptop on kgh?? TIA.

Depending on how broken it is, there's a program, GetDataBack, that has saved my data before. You use the free version to scan your drive, and if it finds something, then you pay for it to actually get the data, so if it doesn't work, no harm done. http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
Harddrive Data Recovery? Found a couple old harddrives that I know are full of photos, and I don't think the drive itself it damaged, but the power source seems to have burnt out or become disconnected.
Anyone know of any local, reliable data recovery places? My college memories thank you in advance for your recommendations.

IT guy in rochester guy here.. - get a drive dock (or sata/IDE cable if youre not afraid to open your computer) - if comptuer recognizes drive then it works, pull your stuff off. if not go to next step. - download [GetDataBack](http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm) - software is a pretty simple three-step process to recover corrupted or deleted files so long as they have not been extensively written over (will usually take several hours to run) - tell friends and family you do "Data Recovery" on the side and charge em $20 bucks to save their shit when they screw up their computers. (a.k.a. "profit")
Anyone in Perth happen to know a computer shop that does data recovery? I have a broken usb that I need to extract data from & don't have the equipment to do it myself.
Cheers for any suggestions!
Can anybody recommend or perform a data retrieval from a hard drive that doesn't want to work anymore?

Getdataback. YOu gotta pull the drive and hook it up to another machine with that program installed on the other machine. http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
Can anyone recommend a data recovery company that won't creep through your stuff? I had a drive die on a me a few months ago that has a lot of pictures on it that don't need to be shared ;). It looks like it is going to cost $800-1500. I have to get it recovered because my life is on that thing. I am really worried about whoever is doing the recovering stealing my pictures. Any recommendations or suggestions? I don't want my ladyfriend's private parts all over the internet.

have had a lot of success with this one... (Not free) http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
Okay.. I just finished swapping out the hard drives on my own laptop, loading the OS now, so far, so good. My question is - can anyone recommend a data recovery service?

Data recovery with a RAID configuration of disks will require specialized assistance. This is because either the operating system or hardware disk controller controls the disk configuration. If you attempt to recover data just by plugging it into ano ther SATA chain or SATA->USB adapter you'll either see nothing or a giant blob of data. For data recovery, I would talk to these guys: http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/ -- You should be able to give them a call and they can discuss options. If the drives were not in a RAID configuration, then the options for data recovery are a bit more open. In this case, I always default to using Get Data Back ( http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm ). It's a time consuming process and requires a dedicated computer just to go through the procedure. One last thing to remember, if you used whole disk encryption using tools like Bit Locker, TrueCrypt or PGP then data recovery just got a whole lot more messy. Sorry for the long winded explanation. -Colby
