  I hope this is appropriate for this group! I am looking into getting my dog certified as a therapy dog. I know she needs to go through Canine Good Citizen testing, etc. Does anyone have recommendations for places we could volunteer in the Marysville (or surrounding) area?! I'm thinking retirement homes, medical facilities, etc. I'd like to find a place prior to getting started in order to make sure I take her through the necessary steps as I know different places have different requirements.   Can someone provide me with a good reference for a dog trainer who can help us get our dog certified as a therapy dog? My daughter has a lot of anxiety and is recently suffering from panic attacks due to her heart condition and time she spends in the hospital. We feel that being able to bring her dog into the hospital for visits will help her during her 3rd open heart surgery. She loves her little pup! We haven't had her long...she was a stray who no one claimed, but she and my daughter are completely inseparable.

  I have a little Shih-tzu/poodle (mutt). She's about a year and a half old. Very healthy and clean. When she is around the elderly she is the most calm, gentle and quiet dog. She loves "grandmas and Grandpas" and is content to sit with them and just be pet and loved by them for any length of time. I think she would make a great therapy dog and I would love give of our time to visit with the elderly in our community. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a need for therapy dogs at the nursing homes around here, and what I would need to do to get her certified/registered as a therapy dog.   Hi Ruth. I am an evaluator for Therapy Dog International www.tdi-dog.org. your dog must be at least a year old. The test is on the website. There is a HUGE need in the White Mountains for therapy animals. Care centers, hospital, schools, hospice....I could go on and on. Feel free to message me

  in looking over their requirements it looks very much like TDI and you may be better off going that way if your dog has the right personality. They also mention the AKC CGC and Pet partners test, however the testing itself seems like most other tests a nd comes down to how well your dog listens to commands and the dogs personality. IF you have a dog that is frightened of people or of situations then it will not likely pass the test. The other organization I mentioned above you don't need anything more than basic training in commands and get the dog used to different items such as medical equipment , and get the dog used to places and people. Any positive obedience trainer can pretty much set you up with obedience training and many do give the CGC but it is not necessary for you to do any of that with TDI if you already have a well behaved dog that likes people. you can take the test anytime one is given in your area and if you happen to fail you can take it again at a later date just practice on what the evaluator tells you went wrong. if you go to www.tdi-dog.org and look under testing requirements you will see what your dog needs to do to pass the test. My question is, does anyone know what type of training any dog needs to be allowed to vist senior centers/nursing homes? I have said that I wanted my next dog to do something like that, it would be good for the residents and myself. He is scheduled for neutering this Friday and has a training consult at National K-9 Academy in Gahanna, Ohio Nov 10th. That is where my other saint Bogart was trained and they did an awesome job, he needed it. I plan to ask them when we meet the trainer, but I'd like to have any suggestions from others.

  Do not train for Service Dogs. Our therapy dogs are for volunteering your time with your dog to take to hosptials, senior care facilities, medical units, ect...and we have a reading program for childrens literacy called Tail Waggin Tutors.
