  I will be moving to the area over the summer. I have two children. My oldest, age 11, has autism and the youngest will be 10. Are there any schools in the area that have grades K-7 in Elementary school? (I was hoping to keep them both in the same school if possible) Are there any specific neighborhoods or areas in Chattanooga that I should consider moving to? I do not know anything about the area and was hoping to get some feedback. Thanks!

  Hi Amanda, Welcome to Chattanooga. The public school system for our area is www.hcde.edu. The elementary schools are typically K-5 th grade, and middle school is 6 th-8 th. Most special needs students enrolled in typically-developed classrooms with an IEP, but there are some CDC and DCC classrooms available to those who are not able to perfom in a typical setting. What you'll need to do is send a written letter to the Exceptional Education Dept requesting an IEP meeting to discuss the needs of your oldest. Any past diagnoses and current IEPs would be helpful to bring. Your current school may be able to help begin that conversation. They will certainly be able to provide any records (upon your approval). As far as what is the best place for your child, only you and him/her will be able to decide that. Some kids thrive in a school where another may not. The best way to be his/her advocate is to stay in constant communication with the school and ask questions. We also have another non-profit that has just begun that also can provide assistance with IEPs (Dave Buck can provide that number and name.) We have many private schools that offer programs for special needs as well as HCDE's exceptional education program.

  Hi, everyone! We're moving to the Chattanooga area this summer from the Atlanta area. I have 2 boys. My 13 year old is NT and my 9 year old has autism. He's currently in an inclusion class and will be in 4th grade this upcoming school year. We're just now beginning our home search and are going to move based on where the schools are best for both boys. Can anyone provide any insight? I'm also looking for recommendations for pediatricians, dentists, neurologists, and physical therapists. I'm also curious to find out if any churches in the area have special needs ministries.
