  Does anyone know a lawyer that would want to take on The Childrens Aid Society in NJ? I found my Bmom. I had all ID info sent to me by social worker. I asked social worker if she could just black out ID info in my record and sent it to me. She said no it was "The property of the agency" I disagree... its my history, it contains my health info, the psych eval of my Bmom. It is my information. Why can I not have a copy of it if the names are blacked out? I would like to fight this.

  Talk to someone at NJCARE and there will be several NJ activists at the AAC conference at the end of this month.

  I would encourage you to kick ass and take names anytime you're fussing with an agency. That means approach in as professional manner as you can muster and write down who is telling you what, when, and where and how. Be cordial, but assert yourself and let them know you're prepared to take it to a higher level should they decide to play games with YOUR information. Talk to local media if you can, just be tenacious or they'll blow you off. AAC and NJCare might have someone with a spine capable of helping you, but I wouldn't get your hopes up, that group seems more intent on photo-ops and wound-crawling than the exaltation of equal rights, but then your situation is also somewhat specific in the records you're after.   Hi Lisa, usually you can start by requesting non identifying information from the adoption agency. If you contact the AAC state rep for New Jersey, Judy Foster, she may be able to offer further advice and tips for searching in NJ. You can find her contact info on our AAC website under Contact Us. Also, another valuable resource is the NJ adoption reform website, NJCARE, www.nj-care.org. Good luck in your search.
