  I would try to keep the color schemes simple and clean cut. Same with the fonts. Have your writing lined up in an orderly way so that its easy on the eyes. You don't need a professional service to obtain a more professional look. my website was designed using Wix (free) and despite small little things to improve, I think its pretty professional looking.
