I have inherited a few small retirement funds that I want to roll over into something like a 401k and got a suggestion from someone to pay a certified financial planner for an hour or two of their time to help me find the right place to roll it over into. How does one go about finding a good certified financial planner to deal with a relatively small amount of money (under 100k)? Thanks for any ideas on what to look for.

SFCFP replied:Hi! I’m a CFP (certified financial planner), so I help clients answer these questions all the time. I would recommend finding an advisor who works on an hourly basis, who isn’t affiliated with a big bank or asset manager. NAPFA.org has a filter function where you can search for an advisor based on their fee structure. So I’d recommend looking there and finding an hourly planner who can help you. All NAPFA advisors are fiduciaries, so they won’t try to sell you anything.

You pay them an hourly rate and they make no commissions from any products they sell you, so you won't be pressured to buy or invest in anything. These are the types of advisors that you should work with, and they're all ones that you'd find on NAPFA.

cv5cv6 replied:Is it a conflict? Probably. Did he fully disclose and is conflict waivable? Maybe. Did he tell you what his fee is? Without out that, it feels to me like he hasn't made full disclosure. It's been a long time since I looked at it, but I think insurance agents get a large percentage of your first year premium as their sale commission, so it's worth knowing. For what it's worth, it sounds like he's not a fiduciary. Those people are only salesmen, who will often sell you financial products that you don't need. A *fee-only* financial planner has a fiduciary responsibility to you, meaning that they are required by their licensing board to act in your best interest. You can look one up here: http://www.napfa.org/ FYI - This is something I feel very strongly about since a "financial planner" for AXA took advantage of my father, costing him about $50,000 in fees for a product that he didn't need. It's one of my "don't get me started" topics.

mackstann replied:Buying individual stocks is sub-optimal at best and foolish at worst. Check out the Bogleheads wiki and spend some time learning about passive investing using index funds. You really can't trust an advisor if you don't understand how they're right or wrong. Learn this stuff yourself and avoid being hoodwinked or lead astray. If you do go to someone, go to a fee-only advisor listed on napfa.org. Don't fall for a "fee-based" advisor -- the difference sounds subtle but it is serious. There are a lot of sharks out there, and people seem to have no idea how to identify them. It's sad how many people get taken advantage of.
