I speak from experience with a horse with grade 4 and Morven Park ICU visit and colic surgery watch. It was resolved with the above and still going strong. I've added slowly overtime, cool calories, renew gold and a minimal amount of equine senior 1 qt a day split over two feedings. They also offer a rebate most of the time for gastrogard....use it and you won't be sorry. I've also had very good luck with a compounded powder of Omeprazole and Sucralfate - through my vet. One horse in particular REALLY benefited from being on Equishure which is a hindgut buffer - basically neutralizes the PH. It's been suggested that when treating with a PPI (Omeprazole or Ranitidine) that feed may pass through to the hindgut without being fully digested and causes many complications. It's an ongoing maintenance issue - I give Omeprazole paste before shipping/showing/changes, etc. as a preventative.

My vet wanted to do hock and stifle injections in July, but he was not in work at the time and I opted to see how he did once he was in a consistent work schedule - which my vet fully endorsed. I had him on SmartPak's SmartCombo and I saw an improvement quickly, but the effect wore off and I don't notice any difference on/off. He's been off of that approx. 3 months now and not on any supplements. He gets about 4 lbs of Purina Ultium a day with 5 large flakes of hay and has not had issues maintaining weight. He is in moderate work (30 min to 1 hr 4-5+ times a week) and we are aiming to event beginner novice next year. He does come out stiff, but typically works out of it. He does not currently have any injuries, but has a very old splint that he raced on and stayed sound. Main issues are hocks and stifles and a mystery stiffness in his right front (not the splint leg). A bit long winded, but there's an overview of my situation. My head kind of spins when I look at the supplement options out there, so I wanted to know who has had the most luck with what. The first tube I got was fine, and the second was so watery about half of the six dose tube spilled out. I emailed horseprerace customer service about this and they sent me a new tube via priority shipping and recommended that I refrigerate it in the future (tube only says to keep it under 68 degrees). Anyway, point being, yes refrigerating it is a bit of a pain, but I was happy with their customer service for replacing my wasted tube so quickly. As far as results are concerned, my horse overall seems a bit less anxious and his manure is more formed, so I think it may be helping a little bit ( he hasn't been on it long enough for me to be sure yet), and I did not have him scoped, so I unfortunately am not much help with reporting results in that area. She’s bit of a hard keeper and has been having a hard time adjusting to Virginia’s humidity as she’s lived in Ohio all her life up until February when I purchased her. Right now she is very depressed and her chronic diarrhea has not cleared up even after the week of Gastrogard. She is eating better, but I am more so worried about her depression. It is very expensive to use the pills from the store because you need to give them 114 Omeprazole pills in order to reach the treatment dose. I also suggest abler.com - I have had success with their products as well.

Clearly on a budget, planning on UG.Michelle M. replied:Aloe vera juice, marshmallow root, papaya - these things are great preventatives, but they will not heal existing ulcers. The only approved treatment is Omeprazole (gastroguard or ulcerguard). I have used generic from horseprerace.com with great success. Ranitidine has appeared to work well for many people who claimed the omeprazole did not do much. Alfalfa also helps by buffering stomach acid with its high calcium content. Smart Gut or G.U.T are good supplements for digestive health. Molasses is a proven irritant, it is best to stay away from grains with molasses for horses who struggle with ulcers.
