CAN I REPRESENT MYSELF IN A CRIMINAL CASE IN PA?
The simple answer is: Yes. The Court cannot force you to have an attorney, however, you will have to jump through a couple of hoops to get this privilege. There has to be an overwhelmingly convincing reason as to why you wish to proceed without an attorney, and the Court will require that you present evidence of that necessity. The Court will, more than likely, appoint either a public defender or a private court appointed attorney to represent you. The bottom line is that you are at a serious disadvantage in representing yourself and the Court has to ensure that you are aware of your absolute right to counsel.
