  PennHip measures the distraction index of the hip joint as well as assessing a standard vd view. The Pennhip distraction test can be done from 16 weeks allowing earlier identification of dogs with increased hip laxity and a higher risk of HD. Ideally you would do pennhip over 12 months of age and have the BVA score the VD film for the best of both worlds! The biggest downside to pennhip is that few uk vets are licenced and have the kit to do the test (the dogs can't be held as they often are in the US due to our tight radiation protection laws).   This practice do pennhip as well as normal bva. http://www.abingtonvets.co.uk/pennhip/ I'm interestedin what you mean by' the x-rays are not as good as hoped for' do you mean poorly devloped or positioned or just bad scores? After speaking to hip panellists if the plate is good enough to score even slightly better positioning will only change the score by one or two a side (often putting them on the other side)
