xxXX69yourmom69XXxx asked:Moving to Oahu in a year with some questions I'm in the military and I'm going to be stationed at Pearl Harbor in about a year, I have some questions and need some advice and hopefully this is the correct subreddit for them. 1. I read the wiki and it says finding rentals is near impossible if you're not physically there (and I have a cat which is another issue). I'm not sure if I'll be able to take leave before hand due to my command's workload before we move to HI. What's the best way to go about this? 2. Will I have to register my truck in Hawaii? The DMV website isn't exactly helpful in figuring out if I'm exempt from this. 3. Is there work for my wife? She's got a BS in biology with a minor in chemistry and neuro-biology and wants to do lab work. Are there a decent amount of jobs in those fields? 4. Is there a cheap place to get decent furniture (like ikea) or is it better to buy that stuff CONUS and just let the government ship it all for free? Thanks for any help.

If you want to cut traffic time, high rent, high maintenance fees, pet-friendly place, etc best option is to live in military housing. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Remax, Western homes, Coldwell banker, Vaughn, red balloon, all have individual rentals they advertise for owners, the best option would be to swing by 1 of the offices and grab a rental list , check their websites, or call to see if they can email you one. We didn't really find any rental agents we liked here and could find a whole lot of info about as far as customer satisfaction. We have heard a lot of horror stories though. I think it really depends on the family and their situation (kids, pets etc) on what will be a good fit.

Windermere Real Estate/Whidbey Island is a great agency to go through if you want to go that route. Oak Harbor is where the base is and where most military live. Coupeville is about 15-20 minutes away (still on the island) and Anacortes is about 20-30 minutes away (off island). Message me if you have any other questions!

We lived there and then moved to the edgewater area and loved living there. Look on ahrn.com. Trident is a not so great rental company but they have some decent homes. I would if loved to lie in lake wildwood but it is a commute to lots of places since it's so far out. No matter what neighborhood you live in there will be some sort of crime or bad stuff going on so you can just look at that. Plumas lake is nice but it's a little farther out for grocery. I would figure out your spouses hours of work and see what gates work best for the times they work. Not all gates are open 24 hours so I your spouse works before 5 am or after 9 pm I would look into which gate it's best to live close to so their commute isn't as long.

That's the best best site to use since they use your BAH information have have estimates of distance to your future duty station right there. Also many of them are verified and inspected, so you are much less likely to run into scams. Also check out militarybyowner.com, zillow.com, trulia.com. There's also a facebook page, "San Diego Military Spouses" and several other that I found with many helpful ladies to help point you in the right direction and help answer specific questions to the area. I'm househunting as well, so let me know if you find any awesome websites I haven't seen! Good luck, I know how stressful this is.

Our housing is through Lincoln Military Housing, I suggest you go to their website and check out the properties. At the bottom right I believe is the hot sheet that posts a list of available properties. Tough to live in housing here if you have pets though. I'm coast guard so we are actually in San Diego but if I were you I would be looking at Temecula. Alot of us would like to live there you get a lot of bang for your buck but I do believe that it's 30 miles or so from Pendleton. Other than that I am familiar with Oceanside, that's nice as well from what I know. If you look on Craigslist click on the north county San Diego tab. You can also do a search on ahrn.com and narrow it by all of your preferences. I don't know what your BAH will be or what size or type of place you are looking for but there are def alot of options on the economy especially that far north! Good Luck!

I know a lot of people that are stationed there live in Mary Esther, FWB, and Navarre. In Navarre you get a lot more bang for your buck. Check out ahrn.com for rentals. It's very helpful!

Yes, that's the way the Army does it now and it's a gigantic pain in the butt. You have to look for 10 places to rent each week to keep your TLA. The housing office has listings. Did they give you any to start with? Also check www.AHRN.com for current listings in your BAH range. Mililani can be expensive, but is the nicest community close to Schofield. Do you have kids? You'd want to look at townhomes in Mililani to keep the cost down. Waipio and Waikele are also nice. Further away, you can find more affordable homes in Kapolei, Makakilo, and Ewa Beach.

No joke, people were walking behind us looking at the house, but since our appointment was before theirs we got the first dibbs! lots to do, kids activities and clubs, sports, etc. I heard that if you have three+ kids, you can get the realtor 9 if you use one) fee reimbursed since it is considered to be more difficult to find larger homes. It is worth asking about. Good luck with your move. Also, try and reserve TLF as soon as possible, otherwise you will be off base. And, have your husband take the driver's test prior to arrival that way you can rent a car no problem.

The waiting list depends on how many bedrooms you need the 2 bedroom stairwell was 2-4 months on vogelweh and then almost a year or more for ramstien and landstuhl. The town homes are a longer waiting list. The housing on post is not bad it all depends on what you prefer. A lot of people say that the stairwell apt is much more spacious then the town houses. The town houses are nice they are huge but it's comfy it's not a horrible size the kitchen tho is small. Vogelweh is in the middle that base is about 15 20 min drive to landsthul and ramstien. Personally I didnt want to live on base. I'm moving into my apt tomorrow which is in a small village called sembach it's about 10 min from my hubby's job. Cause a lot of times you don't work on the base that you live on. It's not bad to live on post you just have to budget yourself. The army pays for your rent and utilities when you live off post plus you get vat forms which taxes the 19% tax off your utilities and your cell phone company and cable/internet company which most people use Tks. You need to make sure you are constantly talking to your guys sponsor I can't tell you how many horror stories I have heard of people coming here and the sponsor not being there and being stuck in a hotel for weeks. As soon as you get orders you need to find out the number to all the hotels on base and have your spouse call from the Dsn line to make reservations for a hotel or you are going to be stuck off post And I have not heard really anything good about the hotels off post. I am staying at the air force inn and we lucked out the hotel is very nice. The hotels on the bases usually the hotels Are booked 3 months out. Do not bring your washer and dryer or any huge appliances. The army provides all of that for you weather you live on base or off base. According to what I was told if receiving tla you really don't get to choose the base you want to live on you can but u risk loosing your tla if you don't take what they 1 st offer you. If you want to see what is off post go to ahrn.com plenty of houses or apt to look on that site. You don't have to worry about the down deposit the army provides that to you also. If you for fAct want to live on post then that's fine you have to let housing know. Usually what happens is you have to move off base Anyways to wait till on pos housing is available. There is apt you can find it on the ahrn.com website site there called temporary lodging or tla apt. There fully furnished apt. You live there until housing is Available your house hold goods go in storage. The army pays the rent for those apt just like any other apt or house only difference I'd that they know you are there until you are offered housing on post and you don't have any of your stuff. Some people look for a reg apt to rent out and have there stuff delivered to the apt and wait till housing is available then the army moves on post. The army will move on post but not off. Your kids go to the schools on post there are multiple schools on different post there great schools from what I have heard there are also German schools which I have heard are great also and the kids pick up on German really fast if they do. There is a lot of info I can give you so If you have any questions at all about anything else just MSG me or comment on my wall. I thought I was going fully informed when I got here and I was not. I can really help you since we just got here our selves And now know all the info we need to know. =) I love Germany and I have only been here for 3 weeks it is what you make it good luck =)

The yards are very small and not fenced in, if you have a dog you have to keep it on a leash at all times or you have to pay to have a fence put up (and taken down when you move). Most of the houses currently available are 4 family homes which was hard for us coming from a duplex. The parks and playgrounds seem great. Oh also just a heads up base housing is not actually on base, it is fenced in and has a gate but it is on the other side of the highway (close by) it was very confusing when we got there. Lastly, since you will be PCSing during the busy season make sure to call TLF as soon as you know your plans so you can use temporary housing (it fills up quick). If you are considering other options ahrn.com is a military website for renting off base, we found it very helpful but we ended up buying a place (better use of our BAH /E-5). Hope this helps!

My husband is an E5 and we currently have a 3 year old son I am looking for any info about the base/ area. Which side of town to look at? things to do? best schools? on base vs off base housing? job market? My husband and I will be there for 4 years and are thinking of buying a house too so any info on the housing market would be awesome! Any advice or experiences with the base or area would be fantastic! Also he is going to be an instructor at the corpsman school and were told we wont be able to even have base housing.
