  To begin with, I grew up with this amazing breed as a child and would like to introduce my children to it as well. I have been casually looking for the last few months for a reputable breeder. Unfortunately, it has not been easy finding anyone who even has them close to me or when I do they haven’t been the quality that I would prefer. I live on a farm in the very southeast corner of TN within a 5 minute drive to both NC and GA. I am looking for an AKC registered dark brown female puppy, hopefully within a 3 hour drive. Please PM me with any suggestions of where to search or litter information. Proven/Champion bloodlines are a plus but not required.

  I plan to travel through the US from the 17th of September to the 16th of October. My flight is going to and from Chicago. During this time I want to attend hunt test (not sure if Seniors or Juniors with my chessie Crosswind's Curtiz) and want to meet as many Chessie People as possible. :-) Picking up my puppy (CoolWater's Purling Oakleaf) from the Memphis area, I am starting to plan my trip now. Where do I find where/when the hunt tests are taking place? AND who is living in Illinois, Indiana, Tenesse, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin? What are the places one really has to go to? I might go to the Show specialities but definitely will attend the field trail specialities.

  There is a breeders list and pups for sale list on the American Chesapeake Club website. Also read the information on health clearances which should be done for parents before breeding so that pups are free from genetic diseases as possible.   Whatever breeder you choose, do check that both parents have had health clearances for at least the minimum - Orthopedic Foundation for Animals rated for- hips and elbows, Yearly Eye Exam by a Canine Ophthamologist, for various eye diseases, tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy, tested for Degenerative Myelopathy, Exercise Induced Collapse, etc. and some breeders do even more. Parents who are properly health tested are more likely to produce pups free of hereditary disease which will save you many dollars in vet bills over the life of a dog.   Read the American Chesapeake Club website and the information on health clearances, breeders, etc. If you choose a puppy from a reputable breeder who does health clearances on parents, you will save yourself a lot of money in the long run. A dog is a commitment of a dozen years or more and normal vet care is expensive without having to deal with some genetic issue that could have been avoided if the parents were checked and had health clearances. They are a wonderful breed. We've had them for nearly 45 years. Another good website is Team Chesapeake. Best of luck and let me know if I can help in any way. http://www.amchessieclub.org/

  Very sorry for your loss. Check out the "Pups for Sale" and Breeders listed on the American Chesapeake Club website because these will have breeding stock with health clearances. There are a number of genetic diseases and it is just good common-sense to buy from a breeder who does the proper testing, etc. You will have the puppy for many years and should not have to invest in a lot of vet bills from genetic issues.   Have you been to http://www.amchessieclub.org/ pups for sale and a breeders list. It is important to buy a pup from breeders with health clearances on breeding stock, temperament testing, etc. as vet bills over the life of average dog can be very expensive. Also Google Team Chesapeake.

  A good place to start would be to contact her breeder. S/he would know the strengths and weaknesses of her pedigree and might know of suitable sires. If you aren't a member, you should join the national breed club www.amchessieclub.org ACC has lots of resources as well as a mentoring program

  Contact Mary Williams, she's the ACC Regional Director for NC (contact info www.amchessieclub.org on Regional Director page). She'll know who has pups, who has good breedings planned, etc. Very knowledgeable too.
