  I would love to see the establishment of a forum where we, as semi-professional and professional photographers can share ideas, costing structures and advice. Which printer to use? How much can we realistically charge for a CD? Or do we withhold images as we did when we shot film? I live on the East Rand so prices are lower than they would be in the North. Add to this mix "hobby/ professional photographers". These are salaried workers who shoot at rockbottom rates to supplement their salaries. I have NO problem with hobby photographers. In fact I started out as one. But please guys by charging R200 for an hour studio session which includes prints and a CD and R2000 for an 8 hour wedding is not helping any of us!

  Hi Hein, Ian Fleming has taken over as president of the PPSA and is looking to improve it but it will be a long struggle yet. The APPA has a recommended costing structure, and the PSSA are looking to collaborate and create awareness for their members too. APPA and SAFREA are trying to legislate the copyright issues on behalf of freelancers but their main interest is journalists. Visit http://www.appa.org.za for a rough suggested pricing template - but note that these are absolute minimums and don't really apply to all types of shoots. Rest assured that those offering cheapie shoots don't have a sustainable business strategy and inevitably disappear after a while, only to be replaced by a new batch of hopefuls. The pros haven't compromised their pricing and continue to get paying jobs. Establish yourself as 'professional' and people don't mind paying decent rates for a quality product.
