Re: ADHD diagnosis and behaviour therapy.
Could you please post for me:
I have a 4 year old son who I have always known to be a bit different. Very intelligent, could speak very well and pronounce clearly the first time he heard things and has an amazing memory.
But in later years his behaviour has got in the way of his learning. He is always the loner. Never listens in a group, like when being called for story time, he is better one on one but obviously this cant always be done at childcare.
At one stage the carers did ask that I have him tested to be intellectually advanced so they could ask to have a carer work one on one with him but no such test was available through community health and it was going to involve a doctor referral, paediatrician and psychologists and at the time I just thought he would be better off trying to fit in with the other kids.
I have now been told by one of his careres (that has an ADHD child herself) that he shows all the signs and perhaps he should be tested. Im overwhelmed and shocked but I do feel that my little man is not just 'a typical misbehaving boy' he is very defiant and sometimes there is just no reasoning with him, timeout helps, confiscating toys does not work, not even bribery works.
I am after suggestions on what to do from here. I really am against permanantly medicating a child, is this what a paediatrician would do? Am thinking maybe a psychologist may be able to help? Or a behaviour therapist? Not after diet advice as I already understand how this affects him.
Open to any advice or recommendations if you have experienced similar and thankyou in advance
