  Hostel and other recommendations for solo travel in Japan? I'm about to start a RTW trip in Japan, spending two weeks there in November. I'm starting to map things out and book hostels (apparently it's hard to do it as you go there), so I'm looking for hostels that are easy to meet people in. I don't know a word of Japanese yet, so I'll need to meet other travelers to avoid a really lonely time there. The reviews on HostelWorld seem to say the same type of thing everywhere: "It's really clean and great, but not really a great place to meet people". So if you've been there, do you have any recommendations on places you had great experiences staying at in Japan? And more generally, any tips about solo travel or "must-do" things in Japan?

  Check out this place while in Tokyo: http://ace-inn.jp/ They are pods, so typically quiet in the rooms, but there is a whole open floor where people hang out. I met lots of people there. It's by the subway, and has lots of local restaurants in the area. Price was reasonable too. Check for Couchsurfing events. I went to a few and made lots of friends. We met again and they took us to really local places that only had menus in Japanese, so it's something I couldn't have experienced without their help.

  http://ace-inn.jp/ is a good place and pretty central to all things. I've stayed there before.

  Ace Inn in Shinjuku is a decent capsule hotel. It's really easy to get to from Shinjuku station.

  We stayed at the Ace Inn in Shinjuku after it was recommended by a couple of people. They have dorms with either beds or capsules, reasonably priced and directly next to Akebonobashi subway stop. We were happy to stay there. The website is http://ace-inn.jp/

  Narita airport is pretty far from the things that you want to see in Tokyo....but I did stay at Narita port hotel for one night before an early morning flight which was very nice...with a free shuttle bus to the airport. Got a cheap hostel in Tokyo I stayed at ace inn which was very close to Shibuya. Shibuya crossing is a must day and night. ...I did a river cruise starting from asuka which was really fun....stopped off at the gardens...very pretty. Harajuku was good too!
