The preference is to identify a local group doing very good things, hopefully well-run and transparent, providing for basic needs like housing, food, etc. One or two charities will be selected for the gift.   Community Shares and Second Harvest Food Bank both have long lists of charitable groups that they work with. SH has over 500, CS has several dozen. Both groups screen their member organizations. https://www.secondharvestetn.org/agencies/
