I've been wrenching on my bike for the past five or so months now, both to learn and to make modifications to get my bike tour-ready.   short of a catastrophic failure... mostly you will be adjusting derailleurs, lubing and cleaning. Swiping out a snapped cable or fixing a flat... or spoke. Barnett sells the best manuals and you can carry them pdf if you want... http://www.bbinstitute.com

Maintenance on my 2 bikes would have cost me a couple G's by now. Never hurts to know your bike in and out. I strongly advocate for self maintenance if you have the patience.
