  We are in need of some serious energy efficiency upgrades in our mid century ranch. It is essentially uninsulated, 2 minutes after the heat turns off it is FREEZING cold. We had an energy audit done last year and know the culprits, but now what? Recommendations, words of advice, diy experts? I can pay in Christmas Cookies and baby snuggles.

  Doors and windows are the best way to go. I use a vinyl product because it's inexpensive and energy star rated. Make sure the windows are low-e with argon gas and sealed with a polyurethane caulking. I insulate them where applicable with a standard fiberglass insulation. If you use spray foam not only is it really messy but will continue to expand over time (even with low expansion foam) and can actually warp the frame. If you decide to go this route just keep in mind that windows around 4'x4' can be purchased from home depot for around $200. So if you have them professionally installed and they quote you like $800+ a window just know it's BS. If they give you the "lifetime warranty" business it's because the company can replace your window 3 times before they start to lose money.
