alphabetmoose asked:Overwhelmed in picking right trainer I have a 2.5 year old blue heeler mix who is reactive on leash. He will bark at humans and dogs. We signed up for bark busters (a training franchise) because it got good reviews on yelp in our area. I just dont think it is right for our reactive dog and we are stopping using them. Now we are at square one again for finding a trainer and I am more overwhelmed than ever. This new trainer will be trainer number four and I want this one to stick by doing all the right research and homework I can do. Does anyone have a trainer that really clicked? How did you find that trainer? I have been yelping and googling and looking at peoples certifications. Is there an easier way of searching? I know that rdogtraining has some good advice, but i still feel very overwhelmed.

The wrong kind, told them to use a prong and that it would help with training, and then didn't even train them to use it "correctly"... I say that cause we obviously all disagree with the use of a prong, and so does she but he's "HIS" dog so she has no say. She sent me a photo of him being stationed to the couch wearing the prong :/ So she has asked me to see if I can find any R+ trainers in her area, and I know there are a lot of Americans here and I trust all of your judgement on good trainers. She lives in Cadillac Michigan, and she says they'd be able to travel about an hour to see a trainer. So if any of you have any good ideas on trainers in the area, we'd both appreciate it greatly! Most gun dog training is very heavy on the punishment spectrum...shock collars are considered basic gundog equipment...not recommended. He is in the worst age range right now where all behaviors are extreme and he s eemingly isn't learning. It will peak at 10 months and then gradually get better. He will not be out of adolescence until 18 months ish. I would also explore other obedience trainers in your area www.petprofessionalguild.com www.ccpdt.org www.apdt.com that might be a better fit. He needs lots of impulse control work...waits (for food, play, doorways, ect), leave-it, tug and drop, there are other games you can play as well to help with that impulse control. I also recommend Leslie McDevitts Control Unleashed for impulse control as well. Shaping games are great for mind work, get a tricks book and teach him a new trick every week, feed out of food puzzles and training sessions...he needs his brain worked most,a chance to relieve pent up energy with frequent free play breaks in a secured area, and structured house rules. You will need wine and chocolate wink emoticon
