Can anyone recommend a place that does recovery of external hard drive data? Bought an external hard drive 8-10 years ago, loaded pics and music on it and let it sit in a drawer. Decided to transfer that stuff to the cloud recently only to find that the drive was dead. Amy recommendations on companies that can recover my data?
Edit: you are all super helpful - awesome to live in a tech town! Btw - when you guys say expensive, what are we talking about? A few hundred? A few thou? (Eek!)

Second on DriveSavers. Also Kroll Ontrack. It's gonna be expensive... https://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/ https://www.krollontrack.com/ No recommendations from Amy though.
Can anyone recommend a phenomenal local business that can help us recover data from a hard drive that is having issues? It’s all the pictures of my babies, so I need someone excellent who knows what they are doing.

Go direct to this company - https://www.krollontrack.com/ - They are in FV and do an excellent job. Don't bother going to small computer shops, as they can usually only use software tools and those only get you so far.
Does anyone have a suggestion on where to send a hard drive that crashed to try and get the pics off? I have a friend who didn't back up and now needs to try and save some (Didn't want anyone to think I hadn't backed up!)

Vendor disk recovery can be pricey.....we've used http://www.krollontrack.com/ with some success
Recommendation for Data Recovery Company Could I get a solid recommendation for a Data Retrieval specialist? I have a failed hard drive (platters won't spin) that has some important data on it. Time to send it away, but who to trust? Thank you.

Kroll OnTrack http://www.krollontrack.com/ I've used them personally. I have friends from college who majored in forensics that work there as well. Pretty affordable for single drives, can get be expensive depending on the type and amount of media and the type of damage.
Need to help a friend with an urgent data recovery issue. He accidentally formatted SD card in his Canon C100. Video and audio files. Suggestions for recovering. Already trying DiskWarrior. Other ideas?
Naiffer R. replied:
Don't touch the card or try any other software. Send it to http://www.krollontrack.com/
Can anyone recommend a computer tech that works miracles. Need to extract some info and pictures from a computer that is pretty much shot.

I had an e thermal hard drive crash and I did a lot of research and cost analysis. Geek Squad can do a diagnostic bug the best service is called Ontrack: http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/ It's expensive but if your files are that important, it's worth the money. I recommend to back up your stuff online with carbonite or mozy
Hey all, I need suggestions!
Our computers won't detect one of my roommate's hard drives, even though it runs when connected. The USB connection is fine. It's a WD My Passport and is Mac formatted. Where would you recommend taking it to get the data recovered?
Christopher S. replied:
Nate - Backup everything you can. Recovering data is expensive -- We've used http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/ with good success before.
I need someone who is or knows a external hard drive repair person. Someone who can recover files form an external hard drive. Geek squad failed. Help if you can. Thanks.

Good for data recovery: www.krollontrack.com Otherwise I would contact the manufacturer of the device. I found that Seagate was very helpful when I had my external hard drive issue, but when the problem surpassed their capabilities, they referred out.
Recommendation for data recovery service? Boss had critical data on usb drive not backed-up. Long story short: the drive was knocked to the ground and no longer spins up (I think the spindle got broken).
A lot of data recovery places seem more than a bit shady, and so I would rather go with word-of-mouth. Do any of you have a recommendation for a place to get the data from the hard drive?
If it helps, we are located in the Midwestern USA.

Can be pricey but have had good luck with sending drives to Kroll: http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/
Okay.. I just finished swapping out the hard drives on my own laptop, loading the OS now, so far, so good. My question is - can anyone recommend a data recovery service?
Colby P. replied:
Data recovery with a RAID configuration of disks will require specialized assistance. This is because either the operating system or hardware disk controller controls the disk configuration. If you attempt to recover data just by plugging it into ano ther SATA chain or SATA->USB adapter you'll either see nothing or a giant blob of data. For data recovery, I would talk to these guys: http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/ -- You should be able to give them a call and they can discuss options. If the drives were not in a RAID configuration, then the options for data recovery are a bit more open. In this case, I always default to using Get Data Back ( http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm ). It's a time consuming process and requires a dedicated computer just to go through the procedure. One last thing to remember, if you used whole disk encryption using tools like Bit Locker, TrueCrypt or PGP then data recovery just got a whole lot more messy. Sorry for the long winded explanation. -Colby
Typical cost of data recovery on hard drive with probable physical failure?? I dropped my WD Passport (inside a hard case) today. Now, it will not register on my computer, it's making the clicking/beeping noise of death, and it stops spinning after about 30 seconds.
I'm seeing different prices for data recovery on the internet, most of which I can't afford on my poor teacher's salary! I'd love to find out that the prices I'm seeing are inflated. Anything will help!
Also, if anyone knows a good (cheap) company, I'd love to hear about it. I would definitely appreciate any advice, as I am not well versed in technology.

[Ontrack](http://www.krollontrack.com/) is a company we deal with when we have customers that loose must have data.... range depends on the extent of the damage but starts at $650 and goes up to $2000 for desktop/laptop/external drives
Ugh! Our external hard drive failed today! Its a mechanical failure. We've called around and it will cost about $400 to get the information off the old one. Anyone know of any local companies that are better priced?
Michael P. replied:
$400 is cheap (suspiciously cheap actually) Data recovery from failed drives is something that takes experts with really expensive equipment that will probably not exist locally. If the drive is truly damaged (making clicking noises) send it to the pros if you really want you data back. Be prepared to spend $1000 if they have to send it to the clean room to get the data off. I've had good luck with these guys, but it does cost. http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/
Does anyone know of a GREAT local computer person that can get priceless files (baby pix, mostly) off of my old Dell hard drive (the computer itself crashed- the HD should be just fine as it was only a few months old) and onto either an external storage device or my new Mac laptop? Thank you!
Michael P. replied:
If the drive actually crashed (does it make a clicking noise?), and the pics are priceless, go with On Track. NASA used them, I've used them and been very happy. Be prepared to spend $1000 though. http://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/
