Be careful of any non accredited classes, because unfortunately MANY people teach "sign language" but not American Sign Language (the language used by the American Deaf community) and they are very different. ASL is not a symbolic representation of English so you want to make sure you're learning the right thing. Interaction with members of the Deaf community is great-not only will you learn the language but you might make some good friends, too. There are books and DVDs you can purchase. Check the National Association of the Deaf website for resources. The signing naturally curriculum is excellent (DVD and workbook). Good luck!!

I would also do a search around your area to see if there are classes or workshops offered close by.
AnalogPen replied:I took some classes when I was younger. Like any other language that is new to you, if you do not use it, you will lose it. I would really like to learn it again, and I do have an ASL dictionary/instructional book. Mine is *The Art of Sign Language,* by Christopher Brown. It is very informative, with solid descriptions and quality photos showing and detailing the signs. My suggestion to you would be to find someone to practice with; preferably someone with some experience already. Perhaps you could post an ad on Craigslist or a similar site for a deaf person or signer to help you practice.

As a 20+ year signer/teacher/interpreter, I feel it is clear, not overwhelming, & good at teaching both vocabulary & ASL sentence structure (not English sign) at the same time. After gaining basic vocabulary in introductory conversations, don't neglect finding/meeting actual Deaf people... who are the best teachers of ASL! Look for Deaf school open house activities, churches servicing the Deaf, Silent Dinners/clubs, etc. Persistence pays off... eventually. Enjoy!

Signing time is good.In college and at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, they used "signing naturally" books and the dvds with them. There are classes in college where all you do is fingerspell and that would be another good place to start. If you can fingerspell, then you can "speak" to just about any signer. It will be a little slower but is a necessity. Start with level 1 and get a good sign language dictionary. We still use the dictionary for spelling words for our kids. It has the sign in a picture form, and it also has the English version an explanation of the sign, so you can use it for a dictionary and a sign language dictionary
Teresa J. replied:Signing Naturally is the most common one that I'm aware of; In a class setting I used the A Basic Course texts but I don't think they'd be very useful without an instructor. Another good idea is to get a dictionary of sign language for your area (for example, I keep meaning to purchase the canadian sign dictionary), because signs will look different depending on your region. That said, it's ALWAYS best to learn from a fluent or native speaker, preferably somebody who's Deaf. The facial grammar, hand positioning, fingerspelling speed, etc...are all very difficult to learn on your own.

Jacqi G. replied:I recommend immersion. I am a hearing woman married to a deaf man and we primarily use American Sign Language in our home. My biggest learning experience was understanding that there's more to sign language then moving my hands and that there was more to my husband then being a man who couldn't hear. That he was actually a Deaf man and culture is just as important as the language.

I love Signing Time and have also found great success from Youtube. We have not had good success with books. The signs are too hard for my boys to understand in books so we end up going online to find videos.

ASL is a full language with grammar, syntax, etc. And does count for a second language for older kids for high school. Baby sign does not. One thing to keep in mind for those who have no background with ASL is that it IS like learning a new language, there are different grammar structures to consider if you are learning the language and not just a few words of vocab for fun (which is fine too). If you live in the United States make sure you are learning ASL (American Sign Language) and not just baby signs (there are some Baby Signs that are almost exact to ASL; but some are their own language altogether and if you tried to sign those baby signs to a deaf person you would look like the "interpreter" of the Mandela funeral). My youngest son is only 16 months and he just LOVES the PBS Kids, "Signing Time" with Alex and Leah (and of course Rachel; but I have the song stuck in my head right now).
Michelle S. replied:My cousin taught me the alphabet when I was in 4 th grade. Then a week later, I met a deaf family in my neighborhood. I made friends with them and one of the girls my age and I became great friends and she taught me sign language! I had GREAT motivation to learn as I wanted to communicate with her! She's still a great friend today! I did take a college course for ASL, but found that I was completely lost and not enjoying it as much, so I dropped out. I liked learning on my own much better with the help of my friend!

The problem with books and websites are they tend to be out of date with current signs. Erin L. replied:Our daughter is VERY oral, however, her first language was sign language and she had a large sign vocabulary before she was implanted at 26 months. Our Audie did not know sign language, but did not discourage us from using it, in fact he felt that while it did not stimulate her auditory nerve, it did stimulate the language center in her brain. My observation with sign was that it enhanced her ability to learn the spoken language, and sign is so natural for her, so it felt right to me. When my hearing son was born, I was nervous about signing to him as I didn't want to hinder his speech, but I signed anyway from the moment he was born so he could communicate with his sister, WOW! it was opposite of what I thought! Not only could he sign "more milk" at five months old, I recorded him saying an eleven word sentence at 13 months old! We used all the Signing Time videos and both of our kids loved them! As our daughter got older, I decided to go back to college (at age 38) and enrolled in an excellent Deaf Studies program so that I could transistion from "toddler sign" to a more enriched sign language vocabulary and usage. Again, she is VERY oral, however, she relies heavily on me signing with her at home when her CI's are off and I use it to fill in the gaps when we're out and about and it's too loud and she misses things.

If you just want to learn a little then both schools are great...... If you want a degree in the language Chaffey offers that, if you want to be a interpreter then Mt. Sac is the place to go as Chaffey does not have a interpreter program at the moment, Mt. Sac. Program is awesome, the teachers are great and everyone is like family there within the program, it is like a close knit community :)
