TIN PAN ALLEY CLUB : AS AT OCTOBER 1987 (Written by the late Gordon Leys)

The Club is a musical club and meets every (most) Thursdays in the Recreational
Hall at the Royal Northern Infirmary, Inverness to play in the "New Orleans“
"Dixieland" style. The club got its name from the nickname of the streets
in New York and London which housed the offices and pianos of the popular
Music publisher of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Club was started around 1976 by the three founder members - James
Shaw, June MacKay and Gordon Leys - on alto-sax, piano and trumpet respectively.

They were joined for a short time by Les Stapleton on clarinet and later, for a long time by Willie Wilson on clarinet, alto—sax and latterly tuba.
Willie then went on to form his own quartet the "Band of Hope". The music of those
days was from "Buskers Books" and included such esoteric delights as
“Vamping Rose", "The Moon Was Yellow" and "Winter Wonderland".

Others came along temporarily — Forbes on drums, Ron and Dawn on cornets, Jenny on trombone, Andrew on piano and tenor—sax, Roy on clarinet and alto,
Ray on guitar, a young German doctor on French horn and a drummer who drifted in was strongly encouraged to drift out. Ron, on piano, spent his holidays with us and no doubt will again. Young David Shaw and young Martin Leys also came and went. Permanent members of the band began to join, Jirmmy Scott on clarinet and tenor-sax, Charles Rennie on valve trombone and piano, Frank Gale on double-base, Allan Hamilton on banjo, Doug Nairn on drums,George Motion on electric guitar — so by late 1986 the line up was –

Piano - June
Banjo - Allan
Guitar - George
Double-bass - Frank
Drums - Doug
Clarinet/tenor-sax - Jimmy... show more
(Scottie)
Tenor—sax/fiddle - James
Valve trombone/piano -· Charles
Cornet - Gordon

with Dan Forbes deputising for Frank Gale and Frankie Miller deputising for
Doug Nairn.

Sometime between the original three or four and the present nine players dance
band arrangements were purchased and the air was filled with "Under a Blanket
of Blue", "Autumn Leaves", "Charmaine" and "One, 'Two, Buckle my Shoe“ but, with the discovery of "Dixieland Buskers Book" the band moved over to this style
and now, in late 1987, plays this mode exclusively with such numbers as "Tishomingo Blues", "St Louis Blues" and, believe it or not, "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me".

All through its (brief) history the band has been invited to play at various
charity functions, concerts, fairs, fetes, dances, dinners and so on.
Sometimes, as in the early days, the band was a trio or a quartet (I don’t
think it ever was as small as a duet) and sometimes the whole nine-piece
orchestra was on stage. Most of the venues are listed below and the band has
played some of them more than once.
