I feel like now more than ever in SL modeling, one must also be a skilled photographer/ editor. Did most of you learn by trial and error? Photoshop is daunting. Any good tutorials you would recommend?

Trial and error yes, but in SL, not in Photoshop. I feel the best thing to learn is how to take a good high-resolution picture in the first place so that you do not have to do much of anything in Photoshop, unless you really want to. Although I do have the Photoshop skills to dress up my pics and make them look like art, I prefer to keep things simple. Usually, all I do is crop the pics in Photoshop. And maybe I clean them up a bit here and there. So, having said that, I gained invaluable knowledge from Strawberry Singh's tutorials. Although they are a few years old, the basic skills are still relevant. I recommend all aspiring SL photographers to go here first: http://strawberrysingh.com/tutorials/ Dax's Rule No. 1 is HAVE FUN!
