Hello, after a bit of advice, does anyone know if you need a business licence to transport livestock? And do you need to have a licence for towing a trailer?

You do need a certificate of competence if you transport animals in connections with any economic activity if you transport them more than 65 km. If you are a farmer or smallholder than this is an economic activity, it's not just transporting animals for other people as a previous post suggested!! Level 1 for short journeys up to 8 hours and Level 2 for journeys over 8 hrs or involving a border crossing. This is issued by Animal Health and involves a theoretical exam for Level 1 and theory and practical exam for Level 2. You can do the course and exam through city & guilds (nptc.org.uk). You need a license for each type of animal sheep and cattle go under the same one but you need another for pigs and another for birds. In addition you need a movement license which you can do online, regardless of the journey or who transports the animal. If you need a license from the DVLA to drive with a trailer depends on when you did your driving licenses and the size of your trailer.
