Does anyone know if there are any opportunities for American docs to volunteer in PG (or really anywhere in southern Belize)? We have a friend who is a GP coming down to visit in February and he wants to do some continuing education.

I would say Hillside or ProWorld is the best bet. Hillside do far more village outreach and work hand-in-hand with the Ministry - they visit villages to do outreach work every week. I've not met their new lead doctor, but Dr Dan was great. They are experienced with getting all the necessary permissions, and are overall very well run. They are private, but non-profit, and charge no user fees. If you are fully qualified doctor, then to practice in Belize, even on voluntary, short-term basis, you still need to go through Ministry. I'm sure both Hillside & ProWorld know all the procedures. If you go with Ministry direct, then more likely you'll get messed around as they try to figure out exactly what to do with you...just ask Melissa McCrae about that! Of course once I start working there everything will instantly be better wink emoticon . http://www.hillsidebelize.net/main.html
