Went to look at Paul Street Community Centre today as a possible venue for a new life drawing class headed up by the artist Richard JG Field. Wow, what a wonderful 200 years old (in 2019) Grade II listed heritage building. A labour of love being looked after by owners, Neil and his lovely wife Maureen. They are working hard to repair the beautiful wooden floor in one of the ground floor halls. Fascinating old biblical ceiling murals upstairs are hidden but starting to be revealed: one of Jesus and disciples in a boat and another of a man holding a mallet (a Shepton Mallet?). Gothic arches, Art nouveau wallpaper, original pews, a woodburner and wood cladding. Many other original architectural features are waiting to be uncovered...............
As most of you probably know, the centre is currently used for weight loss sessions, dance classes, Girl Guides and martial arts. It is virtually unbooked for day-time use though, so is available to hire - there are light, bright and cosy spaces to choose from, depending on your activities. Paul Street Community Centre needs more bookings during the day as most classes happen in the evenings. Chairs and 17 tables are available and there are refreshment making facilities.
