Has anybody here recently bought/sold a house that had knob and tube wiring? My wife and I put in an offer on a house in Irvington that was built in 1900. There are remnants (i.e., cut wires that aren't in use) of knob and tube wiring in the basement and attic. However, the inspector said that there is still knob and tube in use in a few places, like some light fixtures on the 1st and 2nd floors. Everything I'm reading online says that any presence of K&T wiring is almost always an immediate dealbreaker for home insurance. The fix would be about $10K. We are asking the seller to fix it, but if this is something the seller isn't willing to do-- Does anybody have recommendations or advice for obtaining home insurance with the presence of knob and tube wiring? I've read in some places that if you can get a licensed electrician to check it out and state that the wiring is in good enough condition, some companies will still insure you. Of course what I actually need to do is call around and ask, but I thought I'd check here as well, since I'm guessing many homes in Irvington have K&T.
