Tae Kwon Do is the Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. In Korean, tae means “to strike or break with foot”; kwon means “to strike or break with fist”; and do means “way”, “method” or “art”. Thus, taekwondo may loosely translate as “the art of the foot and the fist” or “the art of kicking and punching”. It is one of the most systematic and scientific of Korean traditional martial arts.
It is a discipline that not only emphasizes physical expertise, but also enhances the practitioners spirit and life through training body and mind. Although developed throughout Korean history, it is also a modern sport that has gained an international reputation and is now included among the official sports in the Olympic Games.
