  Where can I find out if an epidemic happened at a particular time in history in a particular place? In Berks County Pennsylvania, there seem to be a rash of infant deaths in my Butz/Butts family in the 18th century. I found one identified as smallpox. I know there were smallpox epidemics sweeping the states around the time of the Revolutionary War, but don't know if there is a good source for records of such epidemics.

  These deaths were late 1770 s and in the 1780 s. I don't have a paid subscription to the newspaper.com site, so need to hie myself to the LDS Family Center, I guess.

  Vera, use old newspapers, I've found info on small pox in New England states. Also county biography historical books. That is the only way I found out how many people in my family died from the "milk fever".

  While you are talking to people in your family ask for birth and death dates and to look at any family Bibles. Death certificates are wonderful sources of info. Another great place to look is at searchable newspaper archives like http://www.digitalnc.org/ it is free. It only goes until the 20's. If you get interested Newspaper.com is a paid site. I found out my grandfather had been shot while working in Montana for Northern Pacific. He didn't die, but none of us knew it. You can learn about births deaths and businesses if the ran for or held office etc,
