I recently moved and I am now about 5-6 miles from the closest repeater and now the radio isn't powerful enough.   Before committing to a specific radio, check with RepeaterBook.com to see what sort of repeaters are in your area, DMR, D-Star, YSF. There are a lot of quality dual band radios besides the cheap@$$ junk radios so many people seem to be enamored with. Buy once, cry once.

  I just bought a Baofeng UV-5RA and I'm in the process of programming it. Since I don't live in Roanoke, which 2m/440 repeaters in the Roanoke area would you recommend for causal travels? I don't want to cram it full yet as I'm just starting to get back into radios. Is there one or two on each band that see more traffic? Thanks for any advice!
