Hi all !
Thanks for accepting me to this fantastic group.
I currently volunteering at the local school where I live in Kouk Doung, just outside Siem Reap. I am planning to put in a vegetable garden at the school to help provide food for the volunteer Khmer teachers as well as using it as an opportunity to teach the children about growing vegetables. The school has basically no money, so anything I source will need to be free or very cheap.
I was a keen gardener in Australia but have only been in Siem Reap for 3 mths, so don't know a lot about sourcing materials etc. and have a lot of questions....
Firstly, I saw here that there may be organic waste available from the local mushroom farms. Does this material have any drawbacks ? Is it high or low in any nutrients etc ? Are there any other sources of organic matter available to build up the soil ?
Secondly, can anyone suggest the best place to get non-hybrid seeds or seedlings ? Is there a local seed saving group ? Are there any charity or NGO groups that may be able to assist us ?
I am sure I'll have many more questions to come but any help with these, or any other suggestions and handy hints would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Teo, (Kurt). (y)
