Focus on reinforcing positive behavior, and take the spotlight away from negative behavior.
Remain calm and loving in the face of strong emotions. Respond rather than react.
Keep consistent boundaries and apply them with empathy.
Talk at their level, and make eye contact.
Accept and acknowledge their opinions, feelings, and ideas.
Never threaten, punish, or apply made up consequences, this only serves to undermine trust. Discipline is the process of teaching appropriate behavior by modeling and correcting until it is learned.
