  I am going to be staying in the Centro area (in a poorly rated hotel) located about 5 minutes away from the Real Gabinete Portugues Da Leitura. Is it true that the Centro area is not safe to be walking around at night? Is the area dangerous at all?Also, Is there anything in particular worth checking out in Rio? Besides Cristo Redento what do you guys recommend for a tourist who will only be in town for a few days? I am looking for a good place to shop and am a big football fan too.

  Andrew, definitely you should pay attention around this area, by night. But also you can have a lot of fun as it's located very close to Gafieira Estudantina and Centro Cultural Carioca, both are great places for local music (Samba and Forró).
