  Help please, I am very new and very green when it comes to snakes. I have the oppurtunity to rescue a male Columbian Red Tail Boa and need all the knowledge I can get. All I know is that he is 5 feet long, was in a pet store for 2 years before being sold to a fellow a few months ago that cannot take care of him. He eats live mediums and is presently housed in a 40 gallon tank. A few questions Is a Vision Cage, 48"L by 28"W by 18"H adequate? Is lab grade aspen the best? What lighting should I use? How big of a water dish and shelter do I give him? How often should I feed/change the substrate? Any good vets who specialize in exotics in Virginia? Thank you for any help, tips or pointers.

  Aspen is fine - just plan to feed him outside the cage to avoid getting any bedding ingested. (I recommend solid bedding for that reason - such as newspaper, construction paper, even towels.) DO switch to F/T rats ASAP. If he's really 5' long and in a 40 gallon tank, he's cramped. Since you are new to snakes, do you have someone to show you how to handle it properly? How to care for it? I'm nearby, in Manassas, but I teach very close to Dr. Stahl's office. (It's on Rust Road, just off Rt 29 where 29 and 50 cross.)
