serpens_caput asked:Long distance movers? Hi Everyone, All my possessions are in a 5' x10' storage unit in Philadelphia, and I need to move them to Pittsburgh. It's cheap furniture and a very old bed, so in principle I would not be adverse to throwing all the furniture out and buying new ones, but it seems like it would end up costing more than moving it. Additionally, I don't think I can move all my own possessions (books and so on) in one car trip. Any recommendations for moving companies who could help me do this? I could almost do it myself with a Uhaul, but it would be very difficult, especially when trying to get a couple of items up the stairs into my apartment. I don't have anyone who could help me on either end. Not to mention that the Uhaul alone costs $500 plus gas, and I would have to take a train to get to Philadelphia and stay overnight somewhere. Thus hiring a company with their own truck makes sense.

Leandra L. replied:My experience is that pretty much all moving companies have issues, but it's best to avoid holiday weekends because the best workers will have the day off and you'll have 3 rd string folks who are not very committed. (Moved July 4 th weekend one year--that was the worst.) Also, if you have a lot of stuff to load, ask for 3 or 4 workers and also ask that they each have a piece of moving equipment (a dolly). If you don't specify, you may get 2 guys, or 3 guys and 1 dolly. Otherwise, I've heard good things about PODS, http://www.pods.com/, but I haven't tried them. Hope that helps.
