How do I find out who owns property? A neighboring house has a tree that is shading my roof so much that it is growing moss and it is now smelling damp inside. I talked to the tenets but they were no help. I know he wouldn't mind if I cut down the tree (actually three in a group) but I most likely can't afford the cost. One guy (a handyman) quoted me $1,000. I wouldn't go with him anyway since I know I need someone with insurance as the trees are close to buildings.

If the tree overhangs your property, you don't need permission to trim it back - your property line extends upward, and whatever comes into that area is fair game to cut back. If it's not reaching over your property line, but is just casting shade, then you need the owners permission. You can find property owners in the [ongov.net](http://ongov.net) property tax information search, but if it's a rental property there's a high chance that it's just going to show the owner as some sort of LLC or business entity, and not the actual owner. You could ask the tenants if there's a property management company that handles the house though, and you could try contacting them.
