For my homeowner friends, beware of United Property and Casualty homeowners insurance! They are the worst! We had a leak last April. I didn't know what to do, so I called the insurance company to file a claim. After they came out, they said it was our hot water heater and that it isn't covered. When I had the plumbing company come out to fix the hot water heater, they discovered that the leak and water damage was not from the water heater but from the shower pan in our master bedroom which is covered under our policy. Luckily we found out about a public adjuster that helps us get what we are due according to our policy because UPC isn't paying squat. The public adjusters conservatively estimated close to $21K in damage and the insurance company's estimate left us with 77 cents after the $2500 deductible!!! YES, 77 CENTS!!!! Now I just signed the paper work to file a law suit against them. Turns out that Florida law mandates that lawyers can be hired strictly on a contingency basis and that the insurance company has to pay the legal fees in addition to my full settlement if the case is proven, which I trust it will be. The public adjusters told me that UPC is one of the worst companies they have to deal with and currently have 5 cases they had to file lawsuits because of poor and sloppy work on the part of the insurance company and mishandling claims like they did mine!
Why are insurance companies the bain of my existence?
