This petition, supported by the undersigned, is directed to the Mayor, Smithers Town Council and Smithers Parks and Recreation department. Its goal is to support the construction of an enclosed off-leash dog park in an easily accessible location within the town limits. A full proposal is currently being developed that will be presented along with this petition.
This park would be a designated area where residents and their well behaved canine companions can exercise, socialize and have fun in a clean, safe environment. We wish to create a beautiful, well maintained space open to all dog lovers and friends committed to upholding the parks rules and restrictions. We aim for this park to be a community project supported in large by volunteer dog advocates and maintained in partnership with the Town of Smithers.
In many cities dog parks are quite common. A simple Google search can show one how popular they have become. More and more each year there are places where bringing ones canine companions has become prohibited. Currently there are no designated off-leash dog parks in the Town of Smithers. Studies show that when a group of dedicated and responsible dog advocates work together for a leash free dog park not only can this concept work but it can unite and enrich a community.
We are asking for the Town of Smithers and Smithers Parks and Recreation to allow and support the construction of an off-leash dog park for the following reasons:
There is not a current public dog park in our area to accommodate safe off-leash activities. Such a park would allow families with dogs to spend more quality time with their pets. Such a park would reduce angst between dog owners, non owners, police and park authorities regarding dog access to other parks. This park would increase opportunities for residents to interact with their neighbors and help create a greater sense of community. Many dogs need exercise above and beyond their owners... show more
limitations, ( handicapped, elderly ) furthermore, many dog owners do not have a yard where their dogs can spend time outside in safety without being tied up. Leashes also greatly limit a dogs space and pace. Socializing dogs is very beneficial to the community. It makes them less skittish and can mitigate aggressive behavior when meeting other dogs and people in other day to day situations. Dogs are Pack animals. Most typically enjoy meeting and making friends. Regular exercise is great for any dogs longevity and weight control. The overall effects of regular exercise and socializing makes most dogs calmer and more well behaved.
Please help us create a dedicated space that allows our residents to exercise and socialize their canine family members and themselves as e benefit to our community as a whole.
