In the fall of 1912, amid much opposition and many difficulties, a high school of third class was opened by the people of the Jane Lew Independent District. The furniture was scanty and crude and the walls greatly needed paint. Yet with these unattractive surroundings, the students began to get a tast of that for which they had so longed, KNOWLEDGE. Jane Lew High School was the heart of its small community. Its scholars and sports teams were local heroes. The school sat high on a hill overlooking the town and valley bordered by Hackers Creek. The last graduating class was in 1966. It continued as a junior high until 1982 and was demolished in 1983 because of oil-soaked floors and a design considered a modern day safety hazard. It remains only in the hearts and memories of those who entered its doorways.
