  Anyone have advice on biking (pedal) as main form of transportation in and around SJDS? Will potentially be living a few clicks outside of the town next year and thinking about getting a Mountain BIke to get into town for work every day. Any advice from cycling commuters on the type of bike to get, good bike shop recommendations in SJDS or Managua, if there's any parts that I should bring in myself, traffic safety etc?

  I used a mountain bike I brought down from Canada and our DoggyRide pet trailer for groceries, water, beer and propane runs for almost the first year we were in Nicaragua, before our residency was finalized. There is a good bike shop that brings in used North American bikes and completely refurbishes them in Managua. Haven't seen any place with the pet trailers, but there are some metal shops that can fabricate a trailer if you need it, but it will be a tougher haul. https://www.facebook.com/nicabikeshop/ Forgot to mention that we were living out near Villas de Palermo for that time.

  The Nicabikeshop in Managua buys used bikes in the US, then ships them to Managua. The bikes are then refurbished and sold at a responsible price. The pet trailer was a life saver, used to transport all our shopping needs but not to our knowledge sold in Nicaragua.
