The Preps
About us
The Preps were founded in 1996 by Eric Schwenk and Stephen Breslin, classmates at West Chester East High School in West Chester, PA. They began playing cover songs at talent shows for their friends and family and soon branched out to local bars and restaurants. Their style was influenced by pop-punk bands of the 1990s like Goldfinger, Green Day, and NoFX and they began playing original material at local gatherings and bars and clubs near West Chester. In 1997 they added Eric’s talented brother, Bryan Schwenk, on lead guitar and backup vocals. Playing highlights in the late 1990s included playing at The Fire and Indre Studios as part of the Philadelphia Music Conference (PMC), the original Grape Street Pub in Manayunk, Rex’s Bar in West Chester, The Blarney Stone in West Chester, The Sapphire Nightclub, The Five Spot, and winning the 1999 West Chester East High School Battle of the Bands. They have played shows with punk legends Murphy’s Law, The Queers, and The Boils.
Along the way The Preps recorded their first self-titled album in 1997, followed by Punk Rock ‘N’ Roll in 1999 and then End of the Road in 2000. One of their songs, “Here to Stay,” was featured on 93.3 WMMR’s “Loud and Local” show. They have recorded several Christmas songs, including a catchy punk remake of “Winter Wonderland,” and recently played in two of 102.9 WMGK’s Rock MD Contest, in which each performing band has at least one physician member, which in The Preps’ case is Dr. Eric Schwenk on drums. Their signature sound features tight, high-energy playing with a clean, punchy drum sound, multiple-layered guitar harmonies, creative bass lines, and lyrics that resonate with the average listener. Although their day jobs have taken them in several directions, on the stage and in the studio they combine to crank out short and sweet pop-punk tunes that showcase their individual talents but more importantly demonstrate their signature group sound.

Did West Chester have a lot of local bands with local kids?
