  HI I see what you mean about the YWCA but I did research a whole lot of residences when I first came here. I actually stayed at one run by the Salvation Army (It was not a charity place for down and out people as I had once thought –it was a residence for working people or students who needed to find their way and be safe). They were looking for professional people. I used to pay by the week and I got 2 meals a day. It was in the area near Grand Central and it was great. I researched again and there are still many Women’s residences in and around Manhattan for long term stay at affordable rates. I have listed a few below. If you Google “Women’s residences” + “Manhattan” you may even find more but it is the best way to begin your stay in Manhattan as you learn the ropes. .
