History:
Bushells Tea Merchants started trading in Australia from Queensland in 1883 a precursor to the modern supermarket the little stores popped up with the Bushells Branding in country towns all over Sunraysia and became the subject of historical paintings, posters & a revival in the old tin signs.
At one time Bushells Stores were a common necessity in the Mildura City Scape every few blocks there would be the iconic store providing everyday items to the burgeoning population since the influence of the Chaffey Brothers on the town and surrounding areas the demand for provisions, goods, groceries & general house hold items had to be met.
The last intact surviving store that has been saved from the wrecker’s ball is this little store in Tenth Street Built by local Master Builder Albert Tune in 1938 just before World War II was announced on wireless radio across the nation in 1939.
Well situated with a school crossing outside and a Fish and Chip Shop on the opposite side of the Road (now demolished) both stores prospered.
Run by Mrs. Dell the store evolved through necessity from providing general provisions to a Lolly Shop. Baby boomers and earlier generations will recall Mrs. Dell as a short thin grey haired lady who made her own toffees, toffee apples and other treats.
Mrs. Dell had her own orchard at the back of the block and stewed the fruit using the sugary syrup to make ice blocks to serve to the local children.
Some older folk have relished passing on stories of Mrs. Dell none so more than them being chased down Desroy Street for stealing her fruit from her trees when the children walked home from school.
